When i walked into the cinema last night to see Yes Man i felt i would be leaving feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. this was not the case though.
I felt that Jim Carrey had dropped the ball of late. i used to be a big time fan when he had done Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura etc. But i definately thought he was too old to still be doing the rubber faced act that made him famous.
Yes Man though was quite better than i though it would be.
He plays a man called Carl who is pretty much a hermit, never goes out, declines all loan's at work(at the bank), but after he gets dragged along to a seminar and is made a public example of in front of a massive crowd, he starts to buy into the whole Yes thing.
I reckon that Carl bought into it a little too easy though, as his reclusive character changed in a flash to a wild, crazy dude. I think it would take more than 24 hours to change your whole perspective, and the way you acted.
It is quite funny though, especially the character Norman, who is probably the biggest nerd i have ever seen on the big screen. From his costume parties(Harry Potter, 300) to his handshakes and nicknames,(Carl becomes Car) he is just the perfect character for the situation.
There are some genuine laugh out loud moments like Dobby at the costume party, or Norman opening the door and yelling 'This is Sparta!', to the bit where Carl is lying there with a fly crawling on his eyeball, or the sticky tape bit.
Carl's love interest sort of annoyed me a bit though. She was sort of quirky and a bit edgy, but the whole band thing was shit, and unbelievable.
The weird thing was, even though i thought it was pretty good, my favourite part was the 3 trailers shown before the movie even began.
It started with 7 pounds, which although i had seen it, was good to watch it again now that i knew everything that had gone down. Then came Harry Potter 6. It gave me goosebumps. I am so craving a bit of HP6 right now actually.
Then finally it showed Gran Torino. It looked so good that i almost got my nut right there and then.
I actually wished i had gone in to see one of those three... but still, Yes Man held its own.
